My Internal Voice

my internal voice

My internal voice has been being a jerk lately.

I have talked about “that voice” we all have many times.  It’s the voice that yammers on all day long in our heads.  Sometimes it’s good…but oftentimes…not so much.  That internal voice is the one we hear the most in our lives, and it can drive your emotions on a daily basis.  And like I said, lately, mine has been a real drag.

The challenge with moments like this is, that I often don’t know why the voice gets louder at different times.  Even though I study it, I can’t always figure out the button I need to push to get my internal soundtrack back on track.  But it’s been weighing on me recently…for sure.

So why am I telling you this?

Trust me…my internal voice is yelling at me to stop.

First, it’s cathartic for me to write.  My thought is, that by taking the time to write it down, I might be able to process it…and take away its power.

Second, I wanted to share something that I think we all struggle with sometimes.  Sometimes we look at other people’s “perfect” lives and think that everyone else has it all together.  We are the only ones with frustrations, anxiety, and “that voice.”  But of course, that is silly.  All of us have insecurities to overcome.

Finally, I wanted to commit myself to taking some action.  When my internal voice gets negative, I have a tendency to stay away from people, and challenges.  I want to go into a cacoon.  But that is exactly what “the voice” wants.  That keeps me from trying new things, attacking new challenges, and living a full life.  This morning (as I type this) I commit to not allowing that to happen.

I am going to do two things (today) to get my mind back on track.

First, I am going to re-listen to the book Soundtracks by Jon Acuff.  Acuff’s book is a powerful reminder that we can control the “soundtrack” playing in our heads.  I recommend it to people all the time.  It’s time I take my own advice.

Second, I am going to work on my gratitude.  While not every project in my life is going perfectly, I am so blessed to work on them.  Today…I am going to fight my frustration with gratitude.

It’s time to flip the script.

Here’s to making my internal voice work FOR me today…and the rest of the year.
