My wife Amy and I have had our hands full with a big project at 539 Main Street in Coshocton. We purchased the building nearly 3 years ago, and since then, my wife has been hard at work restoring it. The results have been amazing. We have turned the building into a place we are proud that visitors from all over the United States come and stay. You can check out what we call The Renaissance on Main here.
And now that this project is nearing the end, we have a new challenge we are excited to tackle.
We have purchased an older home in a great neighborhood that we are excited to restore.
Starting a new project is exciting. The possibilities are endless. There is so much to be done and you can really get your creative juices flowing. As I said recently, “sometimes it’s really fun when you are not sure what you are going to do.” You get to create it. Everything is on the table.
That being said, those endless possibilities can turn into anxiety. When you have everything on the table, it can be hard to choose. You want to get it right. You want to make the right choice. As you run the options over and over and over, it can also stress you out!
Amy and I had one of those moments this past week.
We had been talking over the ways we could attack the new project until we were blue in the face. But we had gotten to the point where the planning and scheming were no longer productive…and no longer fun.
That’s when she said, “It’s time to just go pull up some carpet.”
She was totally right. Sometimes, as we plan for a new project, we can plan ourselves to death. We can think through every option and potential pitfall until it’s no longer helpful. At that point, you are just putting off the work. When you decide to jump in and take action, you find out what the real challenges and opportunities are. You see the project up close. The good, the bad, and the ugly will reveal themselves. And with that knowledge, you can start to make decisions (and take action) that will really move the project forward.
Planning is important. Brainstorming is critical. But at some point, you just have to jump in and rip up the carpet.
