Don’t Wait For Permission

don't wait for permission

One of the challenges that I see with traditional education is that we are trained to wait for permission.  You raise your hand to speak.  You sit in straight lines.  We get permission to go to the bathroom and we train for what is on the test.  To be fair, I get why educators want that control.  It might be chaos without it.

But it doesn’t train us to think for ourselves.  It definitely doesn’t train us to take risks.

So we have entire generations that wait for permission.

If you want to start a business or a goal or a project (anything that creates the change we want to make), you will need to press ahead without asking for permission.  As a matter of fact, if you push hard enough, people will question who gave you permission.  That has certainly happened to me on more than one occasion.  “Did you run this by anyone?”

But here’s the thing.  If most of the world is sitting around waiting for permission to try something, then nothing will get started.  Someone has to actually do it.  Someone has to be the one that pushes forward when no one else will.  That is the role of the entrepreneur (or bold leader).

If you want to create something, especially change, you will need to be bold.  You can’t ask for permission.  It will either take too long or worse yet, you won’t get it.  Most people are afraid of change.  So they will push back on the change you are excited to make.  You won’t get permission from the group.

So today it might be time to act.  Don’t wait to see if everyone will agree.  Many people just won’t see it.

  • Identify the change you want to make in the world.
  • Figure out the next step to move it in that direction.
  • Take that step.
  • Repeat.
