Yesterday I was driving home from work and had an entire argument with someone in my head. The argument didn’t happen. It was just me. And yet, by the time I realized that I was doing it, my heart rate was up and I was angry. Then, luckily, I realized what was happening and I was able to snap out of it.
I actually laughed a bit to myself because of the absurdity. I created an entire story in my head, about a thing that never happened, and it had a mental AND physical effect on me.
It was just a story I told myself.
That happens a lot to us. We tell ourselves a story that is made up. Then it affects our emotions (in a good or bad way). And we create our actions out of those emotions. It can affect our whole day.
So if we know that we are often just creating a story…we might as well make it a good one.
Today is a great day to imagine the life you actually want. When I encourage people to do this, I get the impression they feel a little silly. They feel like they are creating a story of fiction. But that’s the secret. The story we are telling ourselves is mostly fiction anyway.
So if we know that, why not use those powers of imagination to create a story that serves us?
Close your eyes. Spend just a moment of gratitude for the blessings in your life (no matter how small). Then tell yourself a story about the upcoming week where you are the hero. You will have success. You will be generous. The things you want to happen will happen!
It’s time to tell yourself a story that serves you.
