Catching Your Breath

If you are at the beginning of a new work out plan (especially if it’s tough) you might have moments in the first few weeks that are really a stretch.  You feel pain in places you have not felt in a long time.  You sweat in ways you have not sweat.  You struggle to simply take in air fast enough as your body and your lungs scream at you to “stop!”  During these times of massive struggle, you feel like something is wrong.  There is no way you should feel like this.

But this is simply the feeling of pushing yourself up against your (current) limits.  If you want to improve your physical fitness, you have to get uncomfortable.  You have to push yourself pas the point of comfort regularly, until this becomes the norm…and you do it again.

The same is true in sales and business.

If you go to work each day and you are totally comfortable with your tasks, you are not pushing yourself.  It’s that simple.  You are not trying new things that challenge you.  You are not testing limits.  If you want to grow, you need to get uncomfortable…at least for a bit.

So many times, when a new program is put in place or a new challenge or contest is implemented, we push back.  We don’t want to do it.  Why?  Because it makes you uncomfortable.  It takes you outside of what you “know” and it pushes you to try new things.  But that is, of course, the irony.  The thing that makes you better and makes you grow is also the thing that most people avoid.

Don’t avoid it.

Remember that in the gym and on the field, pushing yourself is where the results are created.  Remember that if you get yourself uncomfortable for the short term growth happens.  And remember that if it gets too hard to breathe, you can take a break.

Just take a minute and catch your breath.  Then get back into the game.
