Enjoying The World Around Me

enjoying the world around

I did not sleep very well last night.  My oldest dog (Scooter) decided that he wanted up at around 4:30am.  He wandered the house before wanting to get back up in bed with us 20 minutes later.  By 5:30am, he wanted up off the bed again.  I was annoyed and tired and decided to just get up.

Once I got up and let Scooter outside, the younger dog decided to get up as well.  Of course he did.

I put the younger dog (Finn) on the leash and went outside into the cool dark air.  It was quiet and there was a chill in the air.  As Finn walked around the yard trying to find the perfect spot to pee, I took a breath and looked up.

Above me was the clearest brightest sky I have seen in quite some time.

I took just a moment and looked around at the stars and the moon.  I even considered, just for a second, taking a picture.  It was so bright to my eyes.  But I immediately dismissed it because this is the kind of image that even the newest phone cannot capture.  It would have been a waste of effort…and it would have taken me away from enjoying the moment.

I often struggle to take a moment like this in.  I spend my morning trying to get things done before I have to tackle the rest of my day.  But just for a moment I allowed myself to enjoy it.

It was early.  There was a chill in the air.  The dogs were still a bit annoying.  But as I took a breath I realized that I need to do more to enjoy the world that is all around me.
